UP shows way for multipurpose ID card

LUCKNOW: Uttar Pradesh leads the nation by becoming the first state to be all set for issuing the multipurpose national identity card. A pilot project started in 2003 for this purpose is about to be completed in Nautanwa tehasil of Maharajganj district. The project was conceived at the behest of the Centre under its scheme to establish a national register of Indian citizens. The multipurpose identity cards are important from nation's security point of view as it would help police in identifying infiltrators, criminals, smugglers and terrorists from across the border as every valid resident of the country would be carrying the identity card. A pilot project is currently underway in UP along with 12 other states. Two tehasils were taken up for survey under the project in J&K, one specific area each in Uttranchal, West Bengal, Assam, Tirpura, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Goa, Pandicherry, Gujarat, Rajesthan and Delhi. In this regard, UP is ahead of all other states as a baseline survey
