PhD after graduation? Yes, if a UGC proposal gets govt's nod

NEW DELHI: You may be eligible for a PhD just after graduation if a proposal in this regard gets the government's nod.
A committee, appointed by the government to suggest academic activities and functioning of the 14 upcoming world class universities, is seriously mulling over this idea which is seen as a step to attract more students to research.
The new system, if implemented, would bypass the conventional route of doing PhD after Masters and M Phil programmes.
"The proposal is that the new 14 universities will introduce a four-year under-graduate course with direct mobility to Ph.D. Those who want to do MA, they can as well do so by additional one-year course after four-year graduation," UGC Chairman Prof Sukhadeo Thorat, who heads the committee, said.
The rationale behind such proposal is that in the conventional system, students tend to lose interest for PhD after they spend three years of graduation, two years for Masters degree and again two years for M Phil.
"The conventional method is a long route. The new proposal on PhD would cut short on M Phil and Masters," he said.
The proposal assumes significance in view of less number of students taking interest into research.
"This is a good idea. The committee will discuss it and take a final decision on it with a month time," Thorat said.
